The Basic Education Certificate Examination is an exam conducted by WAEC to student who has successfully completed the nine years Basic education course in Ghana, it serves as a basics for the placement of student into second cycle institutions and also for certification. As a result of the free Secondary education introduced by the Government of Ghana, the number if candidates who sat for this year's Examination recorded a significant increase over the years before. This year over 500,000 candidates sat for the examination at 546 centers across the country. The exam has come to a successful end today meaning over 500,000 people has graduated from the basic school today. It is expected that not less than 80% of these graduate will be enrolled into the various second cycle institutions with a full scholarship provided by the government.
